Merryn and Matt achieve Full Search Dog status
Following a rigorous, two-day assessment in the Lake District, we’re pleased to announce that Merryn, and her handler, Matt, have passed their Full Search Dog Assessment with Mountain Rescue Search Dogs England.
Having qualified as Operational two years ago, they had to go through a final assessment to show that they solidified their skills in searching areas. They will now be able to assist in assessing other handlers through their training.
They searched four large and technical areas on mountains around Keswick – in deep snow, steep icy crags and sub-zero conditions. The pair found all of the ‘bodies’ hiding out, using Merryn’s air-scenting skills, and had fantastic comments from the experienced assessors.
Throughout their intensive five-year training journey they have shown what a huge asset Merryn can be on call-outs, to both Cornwall and the South West where they operate. Search Dogs can cover large areas of ground, including difficult terrain and woodland. The pair have attended over 40 call-outs since qualifying in 2023.
Matt and Merryn travel the 5-hour round trip to Dartmoor most Sunday’s for regional training and also attend a national course around the UK once a month. With Merryn’s 5th birthday in 2-days, she’s certainly earned lots of treats!
Matt has also been the Training Coordinator for the South West over the past year, helping all of the dog teams from across the region with their training goals.
The region saw more success this weekend too, with Mark and Merryn’s buddy, Tio, from North Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team also passing their Full Search Dog Assessment, as well as two puppy’s from Dartmoor teams graduating out of their obedience class.
Thank you to all of the graded dog handlers, external assessors, WCSAR team members and most importantly, the hardy ‘dogsbodies’ for helping Merryn and Matt to reach operational status. Like our team members, they are all volunteers. And of course Matt’s family for allowing him to leave Cornwall so often for training.
Thanks to Burns Pet Nutrition for sponsoring Merryn, providing her with the food she needs to work as a search and rescue dog. And Ruffwear for helping towards the costs of the dog apparel and kit.
