Partnership Post – South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust

Over the next few months we’re showcasing some of our partner agencies in search and rescue. When we get a call-out, many other colleagues from different organistions can also be involved. Some are paid, and some, like us, are volunteers.

3. South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust

SWASFT is responsible for the provision of ambulance services across an area of 10,000 square miles which is 20% of mainland England. Including Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

SWASFT employ nearly 6,000 mainly clinical and operational staff (including paramedics, emergency care assistants, advanced technicians, and nurse practitioners) plus GPs, around 950 volunteers (including community first responders, BASICS doctors, fire co-responders and ambulance service volunteers) and over 800 students in training.

Some of our operational team members are SWASFT paramedics, ECAs and first responders. The Trust also provides the clinical teams for four air ambulance charities across the South West, including the Cornwall Air Ambulance.

On a call-out, we could be requested to help to convey a casualty to a safe location using our rescue equipment. This could be because of the difficult terrain, distance from a roadside or steep ground – requiring rope rescue support.

We can also help to provide medical support until an ambulance crew can arrive at the location. We have been asked in the past to help clinical teams reach locations in adverse weather using our 4×4 ambulance.
