SAREX at Goonhilly Downs

For training this week, the team held a search and rescue exercise (SAREX) around Goonhilly Downs on the Lizard. The brief was a missing 22-year-old had been reported missing and the team had to locate him – treating any medical issues once found.

We split up into three search teams plus Matt & Search Dog Merryn. A number of large areas were cleared and around 90 minutes into the exercise SD Merryn indicated on the missing person. Immediate first-aid was carried out whilst other team members attended to support, bringing additional kit.

As a group, we then packaged him into our warm cas-bag and then stretchered him off to the waiting ‘ambulance’.

It was a realistic training session; really useful for our trainees to see how a search is conducted as well as practicing communications, navigation and medical skills.
