Recently, West Cornwall Search and Rescue embarked on an exciting project focused on developing our team values. As a team that constantly strives for continuous improvement and growth, we recognised the importance of identifying the principles that will guide us toward operating at our full potential.

This initiative was a true team effort, where we came together to explore what matters most to us and how we can align our efforts. We believe that defining our team values is crucial, as it provides clarity, strengthens our cohesion, and ensures that we remain focused on our mission – Delivering the highest level of service in the search for and rescue of those who are missing, lost, or injured.

At West Cornwall Search and Rescue (WCSAR), safety is at the heart of everything we do. Whether we are actively responding to a call-out or participating in training exercises, our top priority is ensuring the well-being of our team members, our partners, and the public.

Search and rescue operations can be unpredictable and physically demanding, often taking us into remote rural areas, across rugged and uneven terrain, up steep inclines and declines, and even underground in disused mining areas. Each mission presents unique challenges, requiring us to remain vigilant, adaptable, and prepared for any situation that may arise.

To uphold our commitment to safety, we engage in regular, rigorous training sessions to refine our skills, improve teamwork, and reinforce best practices. Our weekly training ensures that every team member is proficient in essential techniques such as navigation, casualty care, rope work, and technical rescues. By continually practicing in realistic scenarios, we build the confidence and experience needed to handle real-life emergencies effectively while minimizing risks.

Additionally, wearing the right protective clothing and equipment is a fundamental aspect of our safety approach. Our team is always outfitted with the appropriate gear, including high-visibility clothing, sturdy boots, helmets, gloves, suited to the terrain and conditions we may encounter. This ensures that we are not only prepared for the elements but also safeguarded against potential hazards during an operation.

At WCSAR, we believe that thorough preparation, proper equipment, and a strong focus on safety allow us to carry out our mission efficiently while ensuring that everyone—both rescuers and those in need—remains as safe as possiblle.
