Why I joined:
I joined West Cornwall Search & Rescue because I’ve always been driven by a sense of responsibility to step up when others don’t.
Living and working in Cornwall, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges for its residents and visitors as well as what our landscapes and weather can create and the crucial role the team plays when things go wrong.
With a background that values teamwork, leadership, and performing under pressure, joining WCSAR felt like a natural way to put those skills to real use.
Becoming a Swift Water Rescue Technician added another dimension to that. I wanted to test myself in environments where precision, fitness, and calm decision-making genuinely make a difference. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that, when the call comes, the training, professionalism, and trust within the team all come together to save lives in our local communities.

Teamwork and Trust
What stands out most is the complete trust within the team. Every person brings something vital, whether it’s navigation, technical rescue, medical care, or water operations and knowing that everyone will deliver when it matters most is incredibly powerful.
Technical Challenge and Variety
No two incidents are ever the same. One day might involve a high-angle search in difficult terrain; another could mean deploying into floodwater or supporting a police search for a missing person. That unpredictability keeps you sharp and pushes you to keep improving.
Professionalism and Standards
Despite being volunteers, the standards across WCSAR are exceptionally high. Every training session and call-out reinforces the professionalism that underpins everything we do; from communication and safety to planning and execution.
Community Impact
This is what drives me most. When you see a search concluded safely or help bring someone home, it’s a reminder of exactly why we do this. We’re not just rescuing; we’re providing reassurance to families, assisting our emergency services, and making sure our local communities have people they can rely on in difficult times.

I’m proud to be part of a volunteer organisation that consistently delivers to professional standards and operates with absolute commitment. West Cornwall Search & Rescue represents the best of community service; skilled, dependable people coming together for a shared goal.
For me, it’s about combining discipline with compassion, being there, prepared and capable, when people need it most.
